The Georgian Gentleman’s Library                                                    Talk by Jim Dixon

Wednesday 12 June                              6 – 7pm

An exploration of the ideas and influence of Georgian men (and women) of letters through their books, their libraries and their conversations. Jim Dixon will illustrate his talk with original antiquarian books, maps, prints and Gentleman’s ephemera drawn from his extensive collection. Jim is a Times columnist and former Chief Executive of the Peak District National Park.

Genteel Hands and Rebel Queens in Derbyshire Georgian Business   Talk by Dr Peter Collinge

An illustrated talk exploring the lives of successful local Georgian business women Ellen Morewood and Barbara Ford with close connections to The Crescent and Old Hall Hotel.

The Georgian Landlady                                                                                  Talk by Dr. Gillian Williamson

Thursday 11 July                                  6 – 7pm

Lodging was a widespread practice in Georgian cities and resort towns such as Buxton which provided lodging houses within the centre of The Crescent. The talk uses diaries, court cases and records to explore the comic and sometimes fearsome reputation of a Georgian landlady.
